Case Study 1: Expanding PrEP Access in Botswana – A Scalable Market Opportunity
Themes: Adaptive Management & Innovation
Botswana’s strides in HIV prevention created an unmet demand for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), particularly among adolescent girls, young women, and pregnant and breastfeeding women. Despite strong national HIV response efforts, PrEP service availability was initially limited to just six facilities, restricting market reach and patient access.
A nationwide scale-up leveraged differentiated service delivery (DSD) models, expanding PrEP services from 6 to 76 facilities within the first year. Innovative community-based outreach, mobile health interventions, and workforce training positioned PrEP as a sustainable, high-impact prevention tool.
This rapid expansion demonstrated the potential for public-private partnerships (PPPs), pharmaceutical investment, and technology-driven service delivery models in Botswana’s growing prevention landscape.
